Ask questions about your study material
KognitiMind's document chat lets you ask about your uploaded study material in your own words, and answers from its most relevant passages, not from the web. Answers show the pages or slides they draw on, each conversation stays with its document, and on a paid plan you can ask across every document in a subject at once.
What does chatting with your notes actually do?
Think of it as asking a classmate who has just read your notes. When a concept is unclear, a paragraph is too dense, or you cannot find where something was covered, you ask in your own words and the answer comes from the material you uploaded.
The difference from a general chatbot is that it does not answer from the web or from general knowledge, but from your document, and it shows you where each answer comes from. That is useful when your course has its own definitions, or when the lecture is in English but the reading is in Hungarian: you can ask in your account language, English or Hungarian, about a document in either language.
How does document chat work in KognitiMind?
- Upload the document. PDF, PPTX or DOCX, and on a paid plan images and scanned PDFs too.
- Open the Chat tab and ask. You do not need the exact term; ask the way the question comes to you.
- The most relevant passages are found. The app looks for roughly the five passages that most closely match your question, by matching words and, once the document has finished indexing in the background, by meaning too.
- The AI answers from those passages. Under the answer, source references such as Page 12 or Slide 4 show which passages it was drawn from, and one click shows the passage text.
Each document keeps its own conversation. If you ask a follow-up ("and why does that matter?"), the chat works out what you mean from the last few messages.
What is concept explanation?
On a document's AI Actions tab there is an Explain Concept box. Type a concept or topic from the material, press Explain, and the AI writes a clear, detailed explanation from the related passages of your document, with examples where they help. Use it when you do not have one specific question but want to understand a whole idea.
Can I ask about a whole subject?
Yes, on a paid plan. On the Subjects page you can create a subject, say Anatomy I, add the lecture slides, notes and textbook chapters, and use the Chat with the subject tab to ask across every processed document at once. Answers show which document, and which page, they come from. Subject chat is part of Student Pro and Student Pro Max; organising documents into subjects is free.
What does a conversation look like in practice?
Take an organisational behaviour lecture as a PPTX on theories of motivation. A question and answer could look roughly like this:
- Question: What is the difference between Herzberg's hygiene factors and motivators?
- Answer: According to the slides, a lack of hygiene factors (such as pay and working conditions) causes dissatisfaction, but having them does not motivate on its own. Motivators (such as recognition and responsibility) increase satisfaction and performance.
- Sources: Slide 7, Slide 8.
This is an illustration; the answer depends on your material. Click the source references and check that the slides really say this.
How do you ask good questions?
- One question, one topic. The chat picks the passages that most closely match your question, so a focused question gets a better answer than "tell me everything".
- Use the words from your notes. If you know what the material calls a concept, put that term in your question.
- Use the summary for the big picture. For an overview of the whole document, ask for the summary instead of the chat.
- Do not stop at understanding. Chat is great for clearing things up, but it does not help you remember. Turn what you clarified into flashcards and review them on a schedule.
What happens to your questions and documents?
Your documents and conversations are visible only in your own account. To answer, your question and the relevant passages of the document are sent to the Google Gemini API. Deleting a document deletes its conversation, along with the flashcards and quizzes made from it.
What it is not good for, and what to watch
- Answers can be wrong. The AI can misread a detail or connect two things that do not belong together. Click the source reference and check what the material actually says before you learn it.
- It only knows what is in the document. It does not search the web, and if something is not in your material, the right answer is that it is not there. Patchy notes give patchy answers.
- It looks at the most relevant passages, not the whole document. For each question it picks roughly the five passages that match it most closely. Questions that need the whole document at once (list every concept, compare the first and the last chapter) work less well. For an overview of the whole document, use the summary.
- Images only count on a paid plan. The free plan does not process photos or scanned pages, so the chat knows nothing about their content.
Frequently asked questions
How does chat with a document work?
Upload the document, wait for processing, then open the Chat tab on the document page and ask in your own words. The app finds the passages of the document that match your question most closely, and the AI answers from those, in your account language.
Are answers linked to the source?
Yes. Under an answer you see source references such as Page 12 or Slide 4. These are the passages that were found for your question and given to the AI to answer from. Click one to read the passage and compare it with the answer. If no matching passage was found, no sources are shown.
Can I chat across several documents?
Yes, on Student Pro and Student Pro Max. Group your documents into a subject and use the Chat with the subject tab to ask across every processed document in it; answers show which document and page they come from. Organising documents into subjects is free on every plan.
Does it search the web?
No. The chat only works from the document you uploaded. If something is not in your material, it should say it cannot find it rather than fill the gap from elsewhere.
Is the conversation saved?
Yes. Each document keeps its own conversation, so you can pick up where you left off, and follow-up questions are understood from the last few messages. Deleting the document deletes its conversation too.
What if the answer is wrong?
It can happen, because the AI can misread a passage and only sees the few passages most relevant to your question. Click the source reference, compare the answer with the original text, and trust the source when they differ.
