Turn handwritten notes into something you can drill
Your handwritten notebook can become flashcards and quizzes without retyping a word. Photograph or scan the pages, upload them on a paid plan, and the AI transcribes your handwriting, describes your sketches and adds the text to the document. Then you can get a summary, flashcards and a quiz from it, or ask about it in the chat.
Why study from handwritten notes?
Plenty of students take notes by hand, because it helps them pay attention, or because a formula or a sketch is quicker to draw than to type. Before the exam, though, a notebook is hard to practise with: you would have to write flashcards from it, and flicking through pages does not tell you what you actually remember.
On KognitiMind's paid plans, notebook pages are processed just like typed notes. The AI transcribes your handwriting in the language you wrote it in, Hungarian included, and describes sketches and diagrams in your account language. The technical details are on the scanned and handwritten notes page; this page is about how to study from the result.
How should you photograph your notes?
- Flat surface, from above. Lay the page down and hold the phone straight over it, so the lines are not distorted.
- Even light. Daylight or a good lamp, without shadows or glare from the flash.
- One photo, one page. Get the whole page in, in focus, without cutting off the edges.
- Several pages in one PDF. Each uploaded image becomes its own document. If a chapter runs over several pages, scan them into one PDF, so you get flashcards and quizzes from one document.
- Scan without text recognition. If your scanner app runs its own text recognition, its text ends up in the PDF and is used instead of the AI transcription. Turn it off, or upload the photos.
You can upload PNG, JPEG, WebP and HEIC images; HEIC is the format many iPhones save photos in.
How does a notebook become flashcards and quizzes?
- Upload the photo or PDF. Processing runs in the background, and the document's status shows when it is ready.
- Check the transcription. For an image, the Content tab shows what the AI read. If there are many mistakes, retake the photo rather than studying from wrong text.
- Get a summary. On the AI Actions tab, Summarize gives you a tidy overview of your notes, often easier to read than your own hurried handwriting.
- Generate flashcards. Each generation gives ten cards on terms and facts, ready for scheduled review. See the flashcard generator.
- Test yourself with a quiz. On the Quizzes tab you choose the number of questions and see your score and the correct answers at the end.
What does this look like with a real page?
Take a handwritten history note on the 1848 revolution: dates, names, and a chain of causes and effects joined by arrows. With a good photo, the transcription has the dates and names, and the AI describes the arrows. From there you can get a flashcard on what happened on a given day, or a quiz question on the order of events.
This is an illustration. A blurry digit easily becomes the wrong year, so check dates and names against your notebook.
What happens to your photos?
Your documents are visible only in your own account. To read them, the images are sent to the Google Gemini API. Deleting a document deletes the file and the flashcards, quizzes and chat made from it.
What it is not good for, and what to watch
- Paid plans only. On the free plan you cannot upload images, and image-only scanned PDF pages are not processed.
- Handwriting can be misread. Messy writing, faint pencil, crossed-out lines, notes squeezed into the margin and poor photos can all lead to a wrong or incomplete transcription. A clearer photo means fewer mistakes, but a perfect transcription is not something we promise.
- The transcription cannot be edited. If a word is read wrong, you cannot correct it; upload a better photo instead.
- For a scanned PDF you do not see the transcription. For an uploaded image the Content tab shows what the AI read; for a scanned PDF the text only enters the document in the background, for generation. There, mistakes show up in the summary and the flashcards.
- The number of processed images per document is limited. Student Pro processes up to 30 distinct images or scanned pages per document, Student Pro Max 100; further pages are uploaded but skipped. For a phone scan, the file size limit (25 MB or 50 MB) can be reached first. Split a thick notebook into several PDFs.
- A scanner app's own text recognition gets in the way. If the scanner app adds its own text layer to the PDF, the pages count as text pages and the app's recognised text is used instead of the AI transcription. Scan without text recognition, or upload the photos.
- AI can be wrong. Flashcards and quiz questions are built on the transcription, so a misread date or formula can end up in them. Check them against your notebook.
Frequently asked questions
How do I photograph handwritten notes?
Put the page on a flat surface and shoot straight from above in even light, without shadows or flash glare. Keep one page per photo, the whole page in focus. For several pages, scan them into one PDF so they become a single document.
How well does it read my handwriting?
With clear handwriting and a good photo it is usually usable, but not perfect. Messy writing, faint pencil or a tilted photo lead to more mistakes. Try it with a page or two before uploading a whole notebook.
Can I fix the transcription?
You cannot edit it, but you can check it. For an uploaded image, the Content tab shows the transcription and the description of any sketches. For a scanned PDF the transcription is not shown, so check the summary and the flashcards. If something is badly wrong, upload a better photo.
Which plan do I need?
Student Pro (1990 HUF a month) or Student Pro Max (3490 HUF a month). The free plan does not accept images. Reading the images does not use your AI credits; the summary, flashcards and quizzes made from them use credits as usual.
Can I upload several pages?
Yes. Each uploaded image becomes its own document, so scan multi-page notes into one PDF. Student Pro processes up to 30 distinct scanned pages per document and Student Pro Max 100; further pages are skipped. The file size limit is 25 MB or 50 MB. Split a thick notebook into several documents.
Are my photos private?
Your documents are visible only in your own account. To read them, the images are sent to the Google Gemini API. Deleting a document deletes the file and the flashcards, quizzes and chat made from it.
